Did the makers of Les choses en face have the intention to raise the bar even higher? To jack up the suspense in the spirit of their short? To slowly massage the minds of their guests with - admittedly, more than welcome - cava and fancy finger food for the disturbing vibe of the story that is set in Ghent? Heaven only knows and it seems further away than ever these days. The bottom line is that the confusion at the long-awaited premiere seemed to work and brought me in the right mood : a head full of bubbles, all set for the dark tragedy of unexpected circumstances. When arduous work finally got the technical problem out of the way, the reception foyer emptied into the adjacent projection theatre to quench the thirst for cinematic diversion. A much-needed pit stop was postponed without batting an eyelid.

 

Catastrophy loomed again when the melancholic images of an obscured city faded to black. Or was that part of the film-noir experience? And then two lives headed towards each other like unlit trains, past a track switch that can only be called blind chance. Their motives are noble - love, or what did you expect? - and yet things go as they do. Sour, in more than one language, at a canter in the abrupt night. At the moment the end credits rolled, I suddenly realized it was about time to dash for the lavatory, which sums up this review quite accurately. Les choses en face confirmed my assumption that it's best not to know what we're in for. 

 

 

 

 

 

Was het de bedoeling van de makers van Les choses en face om de verwachtingen nog wat hoger te leggen? Om de spanning op te schroeven naar de geest van de kortfilm? Om de gemoederen van hun gasten langzaam klaar te masseren met - toegegeven : in dank aanvaarde - cava en hippe hapjes voor de bevreemdende sfeer van het verhaal dat zich in Gent afspeelt? Joost mag het weten, maar die is nu even overbevraagd. Feit is dat de charmante chaos bij de langverwachte première wel werkte en me helemaal in de juiste stemming bracht : parels in het hoofd, gereed voor de donkere tragiek van onverwachte omstandigheden. Toen het technische probleem na het nodige gezwoeg eindelijk opgelost was, stroomde de receptiezaal leeg in het belendende cinemazaaltje en kon de zucht naar cinefiel vermaak ingelost worden. Hoogdringend toiletbezoek werd zonder verpinken uitgesteld.

 

Even dreigde het alsnog mis te lopen toen de melancholische beelden van een verduisterde stad helemaal zwart werden. Of hoort dat net bij een film noir? Dan stevenden twee levenslijnen als onverlichte treinen op elkaar af, na een wissel die alleen maar stom toeval kan heten. De beweegredenen zijn nobel - de liefde, of wat dacht je? - en toch loopt het zoals het loopt. Faliekant fout, in meerdere talen, op een drafje in de plompverloren nacht. Pas bij de aftiteling realiseerde ik me dat het tijd was om een spurtje te trekken naar het toilet, wat op zich als recensie kan tellen. Les choses en face bevestigde het vermoeden dat we maar beter niet weten waar we op af denderen. (bho)
